From Spring to Autumn: Why Cleansing Looks Different

Ayurveda recognises two major seasonal transitions that benefit from cleansing: spring and autumn. But each has a very different purpose.

  • Spring cleanse: naturally reducing. During winter, we naturally eat more grounding, nourishing foods to stay balanced, which can leave the body with extra weight, mucus, and sluggishness by spring. These are signs of Kapha, and as we are moving into a Kapha-dominant time, a spring cleanse helps lighten up and clear excess Kapha so you feel fresh and clear.

  • Autumn cleanse: nourishing. We’re moving from Pitta season (hot, sharp, intense) into Vata season (cold, dry, mobile). This is a naturally depleting time. The body wants to build strength and even put on a little healthy weight as insulation for the colder months. Restricting or reducing now works against nature.

Instead, the autumn cleanse is about:

This isn’t a time to focus on weight loss or stronger cleansing. It’s a time to lay down a steady, nourishing foundation for the cold months ahead.


Fire & Wind: How Summer Heat & Autumn Winds Stir Each Other Up

Imagine blowing into an open flame (representing the hot quality of the summer), and it rises. In fact, when the fire is not strong enough, we use a bellows to light the flames, right?

And vice versa, when you look at the flame, it moves the air above it. Maybe you’ve seen the wooden Christmas pyramids where the candles turn the wheel above them.

The same happens inside us. The heat of summer (Pitta) still lingers in early autumn and can intensify the winds of Vata. And in turn, autumn’s cool, dry winds can stir up that leftover summer fire.

No wonder digestion, skin, and energy feel unsettled.

Nature, however, is clever.

The seasonal harvest always provides the antidote: root vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, and warming spices — foods that are grounding, nourishing, and moistening.

So, by eating soups, stews, porridges, and avoiding stimulants like coffee, alcohol, and too much tea, we support digestion’s shift from summer’s salads and ice creams to autumn’s warming, strengthening foods.


Why Autumn Can Feel Unsettling

Let’s circle back to those pain points: dryness in the skin, restless sleep, bloating, low energy, and even hair loss. These aren’t random; they’re signs of Vata imbalance and/or residual heat from the summer months.

In Ayurveda, seasonal transitions naturally weaken digestion. Weak digestion leads to Ama, half-digested food that clogs the body’s channels and creates imbalance.

You might remember from my Ama and Agni blog post that Ama isn’t just physical. Every sight, sound, feeling, and thought that enters through the senses also needs digesting. If we can’t keep up, we end up with mental Ama, showing up as brain fog, scattered thoughts, and lack of clarity. (More on this in my above-mentioned senses blog.)

This is why autumn often feels overwhelming: the qualities of Vata (cold, dry, mobile, light) are amplified in both body and mind.


How to Cleanse and Nourish This Autumn

The first steps can be simple:

  • Stop snacking to give digestion regular rest and leave 3–4 hours between meals.

  • Eat warm, seasonal, nourishing food and drink hot water.

  • Follow a steady daily rhythm to calm your nervous system.

Set aside a weekend of light, simple meals; kitchadi, warm soups, and leafy greens can help your digestion adjust and make the seasonal shift easier. You might notice a little more calmness and comfort straight away.

During a cleanse, meals are kept deliberately simple. Even healthy foods like aubergine, chickpeas, or kidney beans — as well as all meat and fish — are left out, because they require more digestive strength than the body can spare while it’s resetting.


Here’s Why a 7-Day Autumn Cleanse Creates Real Shifts

A guided autumn cleanse will create the real shifts. Over a full week, easy-to-digest and nourishing meals, together with supporting herbs and simple self-care practices, give your system the time it needs to reset. This is when the true shift happens: clearer skin, calmer sleep, steadier energy, and stronger immunity.

  • Meals: seasonal recipes like kitchadi, soups, root vegetables, and leafy greens — warm, grounding, and easy to digest

  • Drinks: hot water, cumin–coriander–fennel tea, or ginger–liquorice tea to soothe digestion and calm dryness

  • Self-care: warm oil massage, early bedtime, gentle routines to hydrate the skin and soothe the senses

  • Yoga & breath: gentle flows like Surya Namaskar, twists, forward bends, alternate nostril breathing, and deep relaxation

These simple practices, when followed for 7 days, allow digestion to reset, skin to rehydrate, and the mind to find steadiness again.

Some foods — like aubergines, chickpeas, or kidney beans — are perfectly healthy at other times, but they need more digestive effort than the body can spare during cleansing. The same goes for all meat and fish, which are more demanding to digest and therefore left out. After the cleanse, you can gradually reintroduce them if they are part of your regular diet.
