A Simple Ayurvedic Morning Routine for Busy Women

How you start your morning sets the tone for the whole day. In today’s fast-paced, hectic world, a calm, grounding routine isn’t a luxury; it’s essential and non-negotiable for keeping your mind clear, your energy balanced, and your stress levels low.

But here’s the key: a calming morning doesn’t mean a slow or aimless one. It’s about having a structured, intentional start that makes you feel calm, prepared, and focused for everything ahead.

Start on the Right Foot

One beautiful ritual from Ayurveda (shared by my teacher Shri Balaji) is literally getting up on the right foot.

As you wake, sit up in bed, bring your hands together, and look at your palms. Feel the warmth of your hands. In some traditions, the fingertips represent Lakshmi (goddess of abundance), the base of the palms Saraswati (goddess of wisdom), and the centre Krishna (lord of love, compassion, and protection).

You can quietly reflect or, if you like, chant this morning mantra while gazing at your palms:

Karaagre Vasate Lakshmi, Karamule Saraswati
Karamadhye Tu Govinda, Prabhate Karadarshanam

“At the fingertips resides Lakshmi, at the base Saraswati, in the middle Govinda (Krishna); thus one should look at the hands in the morning.”

This simple practice invites a moment of gratitude and intention, honouring the blessings of the day ahead and reminding us of something greater than ourselves.

Before leaving bed, pause to check which nostril is more open. According to Ayurveda, this indicates whether your body is more active (right nostril) or calming (left nostril). Step out of bed with the foot corresponding to the more open nostril, aligning your energy with your nervous system.

And before placing your feet onto the floor, you might enjoy silently offering this short prayer to the earth:

Samudra Vasane Devi, Parvata Stana Mandale
Vishnupatni Namastubhyam, Paada Sparsham Kshamasva Me

“O Goddess Earth, clothed by the oceans and adorned with mountains, consort of Lord Vishnu, I bow to you. Please forgive me for touching you with my feet.”

These small rituals create a mindful, sacred transition from sleep to wakefulness, setting the tone for a day of awareness, gratitude, and balance.

Rehydrate and Eliminate

Next, start your day with one or two glasses of hot water. This simple habit hydrates the body after a night’s fast and supports healthy elimination, allowing the body to release the waste it has prepared overnight. Pooping in the morning is a foundational Ayurvedic practice for maintaining health. Constipation can be eased easily with this habit.

Move to Balance

Once hydrated and refreshed, take a few minutes to set the body up. A short practice of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) is a beautiful way to stimulate circulation, stretch the body, and balance your energy. You don’t need a long or intense session, as time is precious in the morning - just three rounds to wake up the body with all its systems (digestion, circulation, breathing, immunity, hormones) and prepare the mind.

Not sure how to start? Check out my Surya Namaskar tutorial video or read more in this Surya Namaskar blog post.

If you’ve woken up feeling depleted or low on energy, add a restorative pose like supported Baddha Konasana, reclining butterfly pose, and deep, focused breathing. This can be more beneficial for restoring your energy without pushing your body into stress with a strong practice.

Set Your Intentions

After movement, take five quiet minutes to mentally walk through your day. Visualise what needs to happen: getting the kids ready, work tasks, errands, meals. Planning ahead reduces stress and gives your mind a sense of order, which it loves.

Here’s an important piece: Be radically truthful with yourself. Ask:

  • What’s essential today?

  • What’s nice to get done but not urgent?

  • Am I adding pressure from outside expectations?

This moment of self-honesty can stop you from overloading your schedule and help you prioritise what truly matters. You can explore this through journaling (use the questions above) or simply quiet reflection, developing your inner clarity to make better decisions over time.

Nourish with Wholesome Food

Finally, don’t skip a nourishing breakfast. Many processed cereals and quick-fix options lead to spikes and crashes in blood sugar, affecting mood, concentration, and stress.

Instead, prepare something wholesome and grounding, like a simple warm porridge. It’s super easy, soak the oats the night before in your favourite milk, water or both, and add all the spices. This makes it easy; in the morning, you just heat them and enjoy them.

This supports your digestion and helps keep your mind balanced and clear for decision-making, focus and learning throughout the day.

Why a Calm Start Matters

When we begin the day with calm, clarity, and balance, we reduce the pull of rajas (restlessness, hyperactivity) and tamas (lethargy, heaviness), and invite more sattva (clarity, lightness, peace) into the mind. This state reduces mental irritation and overstimulation and increases your capacity for calm focus, emotional resilience, and healthier choices all day long.

Modern research supports what Ayurveda has long taught: aligning daily habits with natural circadian rhythms improves focus, mood, and emotional wellbeing (Khalsa et al., 2003). This approach is also rooted in dinacharya (daily routine), as described in classical texts like Ashtanga Hridayam and A Textbook of Swasthavritta.

Starting your day this way isn’t about perfection or strictness, it’s about giving yourself a few simple anchors that help you feel steady, strong, and clear, no matter what the day brings.

I hear you saying, I can’t add anything else to my morning, I can’t get up earlier.

Zoom out for a moment. Don’t see only your morning routine, but your entire day, especially your evening.

Ayurveda always prepares for the next step. The evening and night prepare for the next day. So, if you are exhausted and tired in the morning, look at your evening before.

  • When did you go to bed?

  • How did you go to bed?

  • Did you lie in bed scrolling through Instagram or YouTube, or answering emails?

All these factors contribute to how restful or not your sleep is and how refreshed you feel when you get up.

Do you find yourself in a loop of habits you established over time, without being aware of it, that actually don’t serve you or your health?

But that’s what they are: habits. And the way you created those, you can slowly implement new ones - healthier, more helpful ones - ones that serve you.

Your health is in your hands.
